A very special FREE MeckRoots event, The Recipe As Archive workshop is an exploration of how communities can document their lives and stories with their recipes!
Thursday, May 7th at 6 pm @ West Charlotte Recreation Center!!
Your hosts will be Cheryse Terry, owner of Archive CLT, a Black-owned cultural hub and cafe in West Charlotte; and Kaneisha Gaston, co-founder and bookseller at Red Rice Books in Charlotte! Both of these remarkable women are dedicated to storytelling and connecting communities through words and ideas. They work together to show how our recipes and foodways are one ways in which people can tell their stories!
Participants will learn how everyday cooking instructions—written on notecards, remembered in gestures, or spoken across generations—hold histories that deserve preservation. Together, we will explore practical, accessible ways to document, safeguard, and share recipes using archival methods rooted in care, cultural memory, and community stewardship. Through storytelling, hands-on exercises, and guided reflection, participants will leave with tools to preserve not only ingredients and instructions, but the stories, people, and places that give those recipes meaning.
