Food as Resistance: Black Foodways and Collective Power is a community-centered workshop examining how Black food traditions have long functioned as acts of survival, strategy, and self-determination. Beginning with a short “knowledge pour,” the facilitator connects cultural history, lived experience, and political context to illuminate how growing, cooking, gathering, and feeding have operated as tools of resistance—from enslavement to migration to modern food justice movements. The session then opens into guided, family-style conversations where participants reflect on how meals, mutual aid, land stewardship, celebration, and culinary authorship challenge erasure and reclaim agency. Grounded in shared dialogue and critical reflection, this workshop positions Black food not just as memory, but as movement. Guests leave with sharper analysis, deeper connection, and renewed clarity about how passing the plate can be an act of power.
